Get the kids involved in decorating your holiday table by creating a fun potato-print table runner and place cards. It's an easy and inexpensive way to get everyone in the holiday spirit.
Mom should do all of the cutting in the activity.
First, cut the potato in half with a sharp knife. Press a small cookie cutter shape into each half of the potato to create the shape you want. Seasonal shapes, like leaves and pumpkins, work well for this craft. Cut away the area around the shape so your potato is now a stamp.
Kid: Look at mine, Mom. Mom: Oh, that's great, honey.
Mom: What colors do you think you want to do? Kid: I want to do red. Mom: You want to do red. OK. What about you? Kid: Olive green.
Pour your paints into the containers. Dip your potato stamp into one color of paint and press the stamp down firmly on your butcher paper. Clean your potato stamps with water and dry them with a sheet of Bounty before switching to a new color.
For the place cards, trim white cardstock to the size you want and fold it in half lengthwise.
Mom: Let's see, who do we have to make these out for? We have... Kid: Uncle Jim. Mom: Uncle Jim, right. OK. Um... Kid: Aunt Becky.
As you do your stamping, make sure to leave enough room on the card to write the names of your guests once the paint dries.
Mom: This is going to look great!
When you're done, clean up with soap, water, and paper towels.
Your guests will love to sit down to a Thanksgiving meal at your festive table.
Kid: Gobble, gobble! Mom: (laughs)
