At Home with Bounty

Get your kids together to make a flag for flag day. Hang the flag outside the house where everyone can see it. Along with being a fun project, the kids will learn about the American flag and its significance for our country. This craft is fairly simple and the kids will enjoy coloring and pasting. You will need to buy a few supplies from a craft or discount store. Adult supervision required.

What You'll Need:

• A round wooden dowel 24 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter
• A large sheet of white mat board
• A sharp pair of scissors or a paper cutter
• Safety scissors
• Dark-blue construction paper
• White construction paper
• A stencil with stars
• Red acrylic craft paint
• A paintbrush
• A container of water
• A pencil
• A ruler
• Craft glue
• Bounty paper towels

Instructions:

1. The kids will be excited to make a flag for flag day. Start by setting up a large workspace and cover it with Bounty paper towels.
2. Measure the mat board 13 inches by 22 inches and cut with sharp scissors (an adult will have to do this step).
3. Measure the construction paper with the ruler to 10 by 10 inches. Cut and glue the paper on the top left corner of the mat board. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.
4. Trace the stars from the stencil on the white construction paper. Cut out ten stars with each one representing five states to equal 50 states. You can explain this to the kids.
5. Get the kids to cut out the stars. They may need some help with this step.
6. Let the kids arrange the stars on the blue paper and glue in place.
7. With a pencil draw in 13 straight horizontal lines that are one inch wide. The lines will go to the blue paper and follow the design of the American flag.
8. Show the kids that seven stripes are the color red and the other six stripes will be the white paper.
9. Set out the paint and some water. The kids can paint in the red stripes.
10. Glue the dowel to the left side of the flag and allow to dry.
11. Clean up any mess with Bounty paper towels.
