At Home with Bounty

Nothing says "back to school" like a bright red apple. This miniature wooden apple magnet is a simple-to-make treat for the eyes that's useful, too. Place it on the refrigerator in anticipation of all the artwork, essays, and aced tests to come in the new school year. These apples make a great teacher gift, too! This project is suitable for school-aged children. Adult supervision required.

What You'll Need:

• A 2" wooden bead
• Red craft paint
• A paintbrush
• Brown construction paper
• Safety scissors
• Green felt
• Craft glue
• A heavy-duty 1/2" disc magnet
• Hot glue (optional)
• A paint pen (optional)
• Bounty paper towels for cleanup

Instructions:

1. Paint the bead with red craft paint. Set it aside to dry. To keep the paint from sticking on the drying surface, thread it carefully on a bamboo skewer and set the skewer over a bowl.
2. Cut a 3" x 1" strip out brown construction paper.
3. Brush one side of the strip with craft glue.
4. Roll the construction paper strip into a thin 3"-long tube. Set it aside to dry.
5. Cut a 1/2" leaf shape out of green felt.
6. Place a dot of craft glue on the hole of the dry painted bead. It's okay if the glue drips into the hole.
7. Slide the construction paper tube into the hole to make a stem.
8. Glue the felt leaf to the stem. Allow the glue to dry.
9. An adult should perform this step: Hot glue the disc magnet to one side of the apple. Alternatively, you may attach the magnet with craft glue and allow it to dry overnight.
10. If you like, write the name of the child or the child's teacher on the apple magnet with a paint pen.
